The Western Alpujarras

The last part of hiking path GR-7 in Las Alpujarras starts in Bubion, with unique climate, influenced by the Mediterranean sea and the mountains, allowing a diverse agricultural production: Nogales, chestnuts, apples, cherries, kiwis .. . At the top of the three villages in Poqueira valley is Capileira, also well worth a visit.

We left Bubión from its church, the sixteenth century, towards village Pampaneira descending into the orchards, and across the valley barranco del Cerezo. In both villages will find various craft workshops working leather, ceramics, fabrics ... and numerous fountains and springs. Going down by the street Veronica we reach the road to Orgiva following it down and cross the bridge next to the river Poqueira and  Central Eléctrica de Pampaneira.

We took a path on the right of the road which follow a irrigation canal, and by sidewalk crossing two ravines Cachariche, until we get to Venta del Aire. We meet a secondary road which climb up to pick up a trail above the mines of Fatima, and we reach the village of Soportújar. Its name means "place of arcades". Together with unique Alpujarran landscape, we can see the church Iglesia de Santa María La Mayor, the seventeenth century.

Back on the path, we take the path to the right and continue along irrigation canal acequia de los Parrales; after we first pass Parrales mill, and Cuscurra later. We take the path down towards dam Dyque 24 where we can enjoy romantic waterfall. Part of the area was formed by a landslide in 1997 below which was destroyed by a flood Berjas village.

Arriving at Canar, we found a ruined chapel, and later church Iglesia Parroquial Santa Ana, completely whitewashed with a Baroque altarpiece. Next to it is an octagonal fountain, with excelent water.

The last stop on the hiking trail GR-7 in Las Alpujarras, is in the spa town of Lanjaron. It is the most important source of mineral water in Andalusia since the seventeenth century. The Arabs called it "Al-Lancharon" meaning "field of healthy sources" In the present times, the water industry has generated significant packaging of mineral water, and has become a premier tourist resort.
